Although described as a regular dies trial piece in the literature, it is more likely that this was deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper J1041. This is unlisted in Pollock. If any do exist, they are probably masquerading as a regular issue proof.
Aluminum J1042/P1176 with only 2 or 3 are believed to exist.
This is also known struck in nickel J1042A/P1177. Pollock lists one on a very heavy planchet. The possibility exists that this may be some sort of mint error. For more on these, click here.
