This is the popular precursor to the Liberty nickel. It is often described as the exact issue of 1883 but is struck from an obverse die with a slightly different arrangement of the stars.
Examples were struck as follows:
Nickel J1690/P1892 with between 2-3 dozen believed to exist including examples in the ANA Museum, ANS, Durham Museum and 2 in the Smithsonian.
Copper J1691/P1893 with over a dozen known
