The regular dies trial piece. These appear to have been struck from business strike dies which is not unusual for pre-1863 coinage.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper J187/P223 with only 2 or 3 believed to exist including one the illustrated example which was given to the Smithsonian. Obviously, this example was in circulation for awhile.
