This muling of the regular shield nickel obverse and the regular $3 gold obverse is unique. It was originally in the 1905 sale of the McCabe collection, where, according to the McCabe sale bidbook in the John Ford library, it was consigned by William Hesslein, a rather shady dealer in the early 1900s. It was purchased by "Hy" at the sale, but regrettably, his identity is not known. In modern times, the coin appeared in the Spring 1975 edition of the Bowers and Ruddy Rare Coin Review, Heritage 3/07, Stacks 7/08 and Heritage 8/10 ANA sales.
