Examples were struck as follows:

Nickel J1680/P1882 which is common.

Nickel with 5 raised ridges on edge J1683/P1883. This is one of the famous 'Blind Man's' nickels. Only 3 were struck according to the addenda in Haseltine's March 1883 sale. At least 3 are in fact known today.

Copper J1681/P1884 with about a half dozen known.

Aluminum J1682/P1885 with less than a half dozen known.

A second design with finer dentils was also created. According to Pollock, this pattern is also slightly thinner in diameter 21mm vs 22mm.
