This is the popular precursor to the Liberty nickel. It is often described as the exact issue of 1883 but is struck from an obverse die with a slightly different arrangement of the stars. In addition to nickel, it was also struck in copper J1691/P1893 which is fairly common and aluminum J1692/P1894 which has about a half dozen known.
