This year marks the beginning work on the motto "In God We Trust". The first patterns of this year used the term "God Our Trust" taken out of the line in the Star Spangled Banner "And this be out motto in God is our Trust". The motto was placed on the reverse above the Eagle's head either on open space or on a scroll on the half dollar J277/P328
and ten dollar piece J287/P342.
These designs would be repeated for the next 2 years and would be restruck for sale to collectors. A discussion of this was included in W. Elliott Woodward's 32nd sale.
Additional anti-counterfeit testing continued on the half eagle J283/P336
and possibly the double eagle J288/P346
although this could be a double struck, broadstruck mint error.
