It is listed in Judd and Pollock as having been struck from an obverse die and a reverse hub. It is also possible that this is some kind of brockage mint error. If it is the latter, then a brass planchet somehow got placed between the obverse die and a Grant gold dollar with the reverse of the coin "serving" as the other die. This may be why the planchet is splayed as a result of the striking.
